Renesas Electronics 4G Power Solution for Smart Power Meter is integrated with the EDLC to achieve a smart control and always-on system. This Electrical Double Layer Capacitor (EDLC) is a supercapacitor that features short charging time, high power density, long lifecycles, good temperature performance, and environmental protection. These EDLCs can be used to replace traditional batteries with defects such as electrolyte leakage as a backup power supply. The EDLCs power can be used for data backup, wireless communication, and when the power is turned off for a few minutes.

The power solution for smart power meter features ISL85403 buck-boost regulator that achieves self-cycling EDLC backup and could discharge the EDLC voltage as low as 0.1V. This smart power meter greatly improves the EDLC’s efficiency and reduces the system cost. The power meter includes an RL78/L13 microcontroller that is ideal for measurement devices and power meters with ultra-low power and built-in segment LCD driver.
