TI's UCC28056 High-Performance PFC Controller, Now at Mouser, Optimized for Light-Load Efficiency

August 21, 2018 - Mouser Electronics, Inc., the industry's leading New Product Introduction (NPI) distributor with the widest selection of semiconductors and electronic components, is now stocking the UCC28056 high-performance PFC controller from Texas Instruments (TI). The single-phase power factor correction (PFC) controller incorporates an innovative mixed-mode method that forces input currents to follow the input voltage so that any electrical load appears like a resistor within the design.

TI's UCC28056 PFC controller, available from Mouser Electronics, uses advanced control algorithms to improve light load efficiency. At full load, where conduction loss dominates, the UCC28056 operates in transition mode. As the load decreases, the device increases its switching frequency to remain in transition mode. With further load reductions, the IC seamlessly transitions into a Discontinuous Conduction Mode to optimize efficiency. In addition, the UCC28056 incorporates a burst mode operation to help further improve light load performance. This feature enables system designs to meet challenging energy standards, such as IEC-61000-3-2 AC harmonic limit regulations, while eliminating the need to switch off the PFC.

The UCC28056 can drive a PFC power stage up to 300 W, ensuring sinusoidal line input current with low distortion and keeping the IC close to a unity power factor while maintaining the PFC as always on. Other features of the UCC28056 include an ultra-low audible noise output, a low start-up current consumption, integrated over-temperature protection, and a VCC range of 8.5 V to 34 V. When used with TI's UCC256301 LLC resonant controller, the device eliminates the need for an auxiliary flyback converter while achieving less than 80 mW at 230 VAC.

TI's UCC28056 PFC controllers is housed in a compact, six-pin, 2.90 mm × 1.6 mm SOT-23 package with an operating temperature range of minus 40 degrees to 125 degrees Celsius. Target applications include desktop computing equipment, digital TVs, gaming devices, set-top boxes, AC adapter front ends, LED drivers and luminaries, and entry-level server and web server equipment. Design support for the UCC28056 is available through TI's Reference Design Library and WEBENCH® Power Designer.
